For the joy of writing...

Over the last few years, I have struggled to write, and to keep up my blog. I kept blaming how life took over and that I find no time for myself. And then I had a few weeks to myself and I most certainly had a lot of time on my hands and yet I chose to do origami than write. That is when I realised, it was because I had forgotten the joy of writing. I saw a snapshot of a publication of someone I know, who like me fancied oneself as a writer. That snapshot seemed to be snippet of terrible writing, in my opinion, and it felt like it was a reflection of my own view of myself where I am probably propped up by a select few creating an echo-bubble that praised my writing, but in reality, I am probably a terrible writer. (Update: I feel I should explain a little here. That piece of writing from someone I know isn't objectively terrible. It's obviously good enough to be published. But the style is very different from what that writer projected it to be, which has been endorsed by a ...

Sheroes in Hyderabad 2014

Image
I happened upon an event this Saturday and it turned out to be a great one! BlogAdda has some passes to Sheroes in Your City events across the country for members. I registered for the event in Hyderabad at Radisson last Saturday. And to be honest, I wanted to go just because I had not been to a conference as such. I am not an entrepreneur and didn't really consider it an option for myself. But the event was thoroughly inspiring for me! So I can only imagine how anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit would have felt! For all those of you interested, there are some more coming up, check here . (I only have one picture and the light is bad but here it is anyway) To begin with we had TiE Hyderabad president (one of the sponsors of the event), Murali Bukkapatnam who spoke on entrepreneurship and why people choose it. A very informative and inspiring speech, he quoted Tagore on freedom, a few Sankrit slokas on women empowerment and even a song by an African woman that asks for n...

BlogAdda and Akshaya Patra fighting hunger !

Image
The possibilities: I am going to #BlogToFeedAChild with  Akshaya Patra   and   BlogAdda . Across India you hear a similar theme in every class of people (except the rich): I work hard to provide a good education for my children so they gave a better life. A better life is what we all want for our next generation. And a better life they get, through education.  Now imagine a classroom full of children eager and willing to learn giving that extra something to make that extra distance. Now imagine this classroom full of children dull and bored and cannot hear a word you say because they are hungry. Now imagine this classroom full of students half empty because they prefer cleaning cars and serving tea for some food. Now imagine the entire class empty and the kids working here and there earning a few rupees, falling into crime, a generation lost! Why would the children clean cars if it didn't give them a means for satisfying their hunger? It's not like they ...

Fighting classroom hunger - Akshaya Patra

Image
The possibilities: I am going to #BlogToFeedAChild with  Akshaya Patra   and   BlogAdda . In ancient India, the gurukula system of education was the most prominent. Most people associate gurukula system with a residential education system and we do have a few now. At school level they are considered expensive because you need to pay for food and boarding as well. But the other thing about a gurukula was that it was a self-sustained unit. It taught children not just science and arts but basic survival skills, including cutting fire wood, cooking food and sharing with everyone. The self-sufficiency comes from their own work. Each student shares responsibility to grow grains, vegetables and to cook and clean. The gurukula makes its owns pots and pans out of clay and they work and live together. I do understand that it is difficult to transfer all those operational features from a forested area abundant with natural resources into today's urban land. But some of it c...

A Book List Tag

A friend of mine tagged on facebook with one of those list of books tags. I really loved it and I want to remember my list and jot it down. Where better but on my blog, with links to my book reviews though only the second half.  The list of books or series that changed/impacted me (chronological order) . 1. Claudine at St Clare's . The first novel I ever read, at the age of nine. I received this as a prize for coming second in class. I only read it because I was curious why people would read so much. And God knows I never stopped. 2. Famous Five, The Three Investigators, and the evergreen 18, Nancy Drew. My wanna-be detective phase. My friend and I would pretend we were the two investigators. We created mysteries in our imagination and solved them. 3. Brain by Robin Cook.It was a fascinating idea. Sphere beats it, but Brain was first. 4. If Tomorrow Comes by Sydney Sheldon. And I still love Tracy Whitney. And it was the first time I read a book with a feisty female lead. 5. A...

The Argumentative Indian, in the times of Social Media

(It isn't about the book. I haven't read it. I am sorry to those who were chaperoned here by Google for the book) Indians love to argue. Whether we are young or old, happy or sad, illiterate or educated, we all love to argue and we have seen people arguing all our life. Occasionally some of us grow up to become pacifiers, mostly because at some point it can get boring or pointless and somebody would like it stopped. But most of us don't. We end up arguing all the time and loving it. It is admirable that in a country with many different hues, arguments are encouraged and stand as proof for the freedom of speech. Most arguments are healthy. Because we all love it so much we need to have one once in a while and it's not too often that they lead to any repercussions. And well some are not. But even a healthy argument can go sour if it lasts too long in our heads. Media in the recent past, has become very 'responsible' and it tries to tell you everything that ha...

Heading ahead...(600)

Image
I need to tag in the title that it's my 600th post. Else I lose track. So once every now and then I feel that need to turn around and look back at all the blogging I have done. Usually, it's a milestone or a birthday or simply new year . This year, I forgot my blog's birthday, like I did my sisters, like I did my parents, like my parents did mine, and like I nearly did mine! So apologises to all my friends whose birthday I forgot and congratulations to all those who wished (facebook is very dutiful). Hence, I look back at my last hundred posts (and even older). But when I do look back, it was meant to be a soul-searching sentimental feeling. So as I sat to write this post down I was struck by writers block for hours. I have indeed changed. I haven't lost the capacity to write, just to be overly sentimental. And just like that I could write again. When I look back, I often feel sad that I have changed so much, even though change is the in thing. Looking back to wh...

Two Months in London

Image
I mage courtesy: www.oldlondonmaps.com I haven't really blogged since I have been to London. I chose not to blog till I find a house for myself and then I did not have internet connectivity for a while. By the time I was fully connected it was too late to catch up. But you need to fill your back log once in a while. I hear is a painful process anywhere in this world. More so if you want to live alone. The first three weeks were basically about hoping from one hostel to another, so house hunting and hostel hunting at the same time. Finally one fine Monday I saw this beautiful flat I wanted and on the Sunday I moved in. A beautiful place all for myself over looking a canal, close to office. What followed was a period of training with work hours that make you wonder what to do at the end of the day's work. But given the many people in for training were actually based abroad there were things to do and people to hang out with all the time. One thing about London, you can...

Like vs +1

Plusone ? What was Google thinking ? Whoever says "I plusone it"? It only reminds me of a plus one for a party. That makes me an extra. Bad wording! But that's beside the point! This post is just another meek attempt to try and compare Facebook and GooglePlus. Facebook was just like any other social networking website when it came. (Sure, it had the Harvard tag but I didn't know it then and neither did I know Harvard much then). I moved from Orkut to Facebook much like everyone else because it developed over the years to become better everyday. To begin with it did not have the features it has today. Simple things like the horizontal tab with thumbnails of tagged pictures on one's profile. Today, it is clean and understandable and gives us a good amount of control on our information. Google is an innovative firm with amazing products and we all love Google. We waited in anticipation and expressed frustration when an invite got delayed. Basically, everyone jus...

2010: The Year That Was

This year has been very eventful for me. January: Had a boring new year's party and felt bad about not being able to vote . February: Err. I acted in a play and walked down the ramp at the culfest. March: I read a lot of books . I almost read like a book a day during my wait for my UK visa. April: I went to Mumbai, stayed in Colaba and worked in Nariman for about 25 days which is almost like a dream come true ! (I promised a post and never wrote it) May: I went to the City of London , stayed at Tower Hill and worked on Liverpool Street which was way beyond my dreams ! This was also my first trip abroad. June: I went to Scotland . I got a job ! Followed FIFA from start to end for the first time (London inspired me). July: Nothing happened, including my birthday. I got my US visa. August: I went to Boston, MA to stay for the next 3 months. I enrolled in an all girls college which I have never done ! I heard I failed a course back at IIMCal. September: I went to my sister...

Socializing, yet not

On September 25th, I killed Orkut! Sorry Google, you got the wrong one in! On November 1st, I started Twitter! Sorry Google, I only Buzz on Gtalk (which the Buzz steals)! I haven't connected my Twitter to the Blogger (yes, I haven't migrated to wordpress yet). Shall do so if it picks up after a while.

Peg n Play

Image
For all those of you who follow via feed rather than visit the site, I have added a google app on my site. pegs is a nice game to play. I used to play it as a kid, except the arrangement was a plus sign on a circular board with marbles for pegs and the center marble was always missing. We used to call it 'Bournvita'. I have no idea why.

New Tab

Did you know that instead of menu/file/new tab or alt+f t or ctrl+t you can just double click on the bottom edge of an already existing tab !!! well I didn't know until I did it accidentally today. It feels like I discovered or something. lol

Dab the Tab

Image
I just installed a couple of addons on my firefox. FOXTAB This is just awesome ! The navigation is pretty cool. It resembles that desktop navigation in Ubuntu. And like the iPod touch. Even 2D stuff is cool. And if you've got like 15 or some tabs on you can have this cool 3D layout and all that. Try it out!!! Firefox Showcase This is one serves the same purpose but in a 2D way and hence not that cool and hence its ok. Speed Dial I finally got one.

Chrome Mozilla Trips

First let me trip on Leela : We have a common course this sem. We were walking back from the exam when she said "Wait, should walk faster" And so I increased my pace when she says she wasn't referring to the speed. She wanted to slightly walk ahead of me. In her own words, "I should walk aheader than you" Now coming to Mozilla: Even as I started to you FireFox 2 quite a while back, I couldn't login to Google which was painful considering the fact that Google controls my life. Then Amrit suggested I use an IE tab plugin and I survived with that for a long time. The beginning of this sem, I got FireFox 3. now there was no IE tab plugin for it and I survived with IE for my Gmail and blogger. So yesterday I Googled up and figured out hope to login to Google using FireFox and I made it. I also got Color tabs and a Aero Silver Fox theme. My FireFox is fresh and happy. Now coming to Chrome: Just when I got hunting for FireFox plugins I also hunted for chrome since...

Nostalgia

Nostalgia is the word, as I sit here in my office for the last time. The G Blast Furnace, Tata Steel. SO many memories. Every person from the head to the bhayya who serves us chai(which we had about 6 to 7 times a day) have become people who will be hard to forget. The people who were here when we arrived, who finished their training before us and left, who got promoted and switched departments, who got admission into univs and left the place, who guided us, who helped, whose computers we started using like our own, who told us tales about their little ones, who treated us to parties and whom we treated back after our first pay check(oh did i not blog the day i got my first paycheck ?? :| ). There are all people who make this company and this department. Eight weeks have passed so quickly. When I came here, I didn't like the place, the room, the office, the people, the language. And then slowly we get comfortable where we are. That is my man survived all these years, adaptability ...
