2010: The Year That Was

This year has been very eventful for me. January: Had a boring new year's party and felt bad about not being able to vote . February: Err. I acted in a play and walked down the ramp at the culfest. March: I read a lot of books . I almost read like a book a day during my wait for my UK visa. April: I went to Mumbai, stayed in Colaba and worked in Nariman for about 25 days which is almost like a dream come true ! (I promised a post and never wrote it) May: I went to the City of London , stayed at Tower Hill and worked on Liverpool Street which was way beyond my dreams ! This was also my first trip abroad. June: I went to Scotland . I got a job ! Followed FIFA from start to end for the first time (London inspired me). July: Nothing happened, including my birthday. I got my US visa. August: I went to Boston, MA to stay for the next 3 months. I enrolled in an all girls college which I have never done ! I heard I failed a course back at IIMCal. September: I went to my sister...

City Girl!

I fell in love with Bombay in 3 weeks, London in 4 weeks and New York in 3 weekends and half a week. I came back from London all romantic about it which wore off in time but I do still like the city a lot. I am currently still romantic about New York and will have to wait and watch if it will wear off. Boston is cute and nice and peaceful which I like but not at the moment designed for me. But Bombay … My heart leaps up every time I am to land/take off from Bombay at night time. I love it when I am landing in Boston during the day when you feel you are landing on water and just when you thought you would, the runway appears out of nowhere. No such airport stories about London and NY looks nice during the day with the Atlantic and everything but not half as wow-ing. Inspiring! That’s the word for NY though. London shows you memories of empires that stood through thick and thin for generations together. New York shows you empires that were built from scratch over a single lifetime....

The Week That was

This was my last week in London. It started with shopping on Sunday. I reported to a new desk on Monday. We figured our favorite spot so far was Wapping. On Wednesday after work we made a short trip to Wapping again. A lovely trip it was! We took a wrong turn and ended up on the river shore. We decided that if we were to settle in London, Wapping would be it :P Thursday went by. Friday was extremely hectic for me, meeting people and everything before my exit interview where i would be told whether or not I am being made an offer. But all is well that ends well and most of us got offers. So off we went roaming around having dinner here and there near Mayfair. Saturday, we had a flight out to Mumbai in the night at 9pm. My firm was nice enough to get us cabs to the airport as well, otherwise they are too expensive. But it's a whole day all together, packing doesn't take much time and I haven't seen touristy places. So we went to Cha...

Hill Dales and Shopping

This week was unimaginably short. The week started on Tuesday with Monday being a holiday to rest and rejuvenate after Scotland. On Thursday we were taken to the Lords. And here is Friday already. So I wasn't really looking forward to the weekend. Primrose Hill. This is where we went on Friday evening. It reminds me of Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho. But Primrose Hill is a high rise hill away from the city from where you could see the cityscape. I though you could also enoy a lovely sunset but I was wrong. It was a sunset and lovely but not what I expected. But it was a only a short while that we spent there and it was enjoyable. Saturday. In the morning I went to Swami Narayan temple at Neasden, London. Courtesy: one of the broker's at the desk where one of our co-internie works. It was a nice place. We were taken around the area, the Haveli, an exhibition of Hinduism and then the Abhishek and the Aarti. We even had lunch there with the volunteers of the temple. It was a...

Oh Lord !

Image
This was my facebook status message the day I was to go to the Lord's Cricket Stadium in London arranged as an outing by my company. It was a small stadium, not as big as I expected it to be. But I hear I need to visit Eden gardens. We were watching Middlesex vs Sussex match with Adam Gilchrist playing for Middlesex. Adam Gilchrist left too early. I think Sussex won. I am not too sure. Well, I didn't know that batsmen change sides between overs, so you can pretty much understand how cricket literate I am. But we had lovely enjoyable food, nice seats and funny mascot. And of course proof that sun does set after 9pm in summers in England (10pm in Scotland).

Scottish Magic

Image
We took off to Victoria Station on Friday night to grab the Bus to Edinburgh. A long painful 10 hrs journey it was. And we got off at Edinburgh to a beautiful city of architecture. One of our friends wanted to drive to Inverness but we didn’t bring our passports so we had to stay in Edinburgh. We got a backpacker’s hostel beds and left to walk around. And walk around we did. Edinburgh is a small city. We walked every lane and every area. We walked to the Ocean Terminal Mall on the beach. We walked the Royal Mile. We saw the Scottish bagpipers singing the Scottish tune. It was the rugby weekend and we saw the craziness that the Scottish take on towards it. But they are mild, so mild are their mannerisms that it is amusing. It is what can be called disciplined hooliganism. And then we decided we ought to catch a rugby match. We watched the Scotland versus England rugby match. England won and we were cheering for Scotland, simply because we were sitting with Scotland supporters. It wa...

Reva, a name

Even though I am in London and I do not see much Indian TV / news, I miss ET and I occasionally look at the ET site online though it is less for the news and more for the editorial column. So it was then, today morning (4.5 hrs behind India) I opened the editorial page of ET to read about the REVA acquisition by M&M. And I remembered by random gmail id (that still exists and is used to cut out the spam) that was once created out of a romantic dream for the word Reva. I loved the name. I still do but for very different reasons. I loved it then for the sound of the word. I love it now for the memory of what a romantic I was. Just like Twilight Fairy. When I launched this blog I wanted it to be anonymous and slowly little by little I can say with my blog's 4th birthday a month away, that it possess me into it and combined two worlds that I romanticised of being separate. So that's what Reva represents to me, a hopeless romantic who wrote beautiful poetry and was once me. An...

Maida Vale

Image
Sunday morning, I looked up the net again for a place I wanted to go to way back from during the days when I used to look up the net to check out places to go in London. Little Venice (Maida Vaile) in NW London It was a canal with house boats where people can rent them out and stay for a little while. And does not cost too much too. We had lunch is the water side cafe in a boat to the rocking movement of the waters. We watched a puppet show in boat again, called the Puppet Barge Theatre where we were the adulty only group while everyone else came with lttle kids about 4 years or less. We walked along the canal till we came to a cafe that was lying across the canal like a bridge. And then we came back Westminister where we took a cruise on Thames from Westminister to Towerhill. Came home for a short break and had dinner. After that went to Towerhill to take the tube to Waterloo and it was a race against time to get to the last ride on the Eye. We had a 4 minute 4D experience prior to t...

Notting Hill

Image
I wondered for a while what I should name the blog post after, the movie Notting Hill or the book Portobello title. Come Friday I just wanted to sleep again.I left for home early simply because everyone else was. I came home had dinner and was watching TV because it feels weird to go to bed before it gets dark (and the sun sets at 9pm) And then friends pulled me out to a quickbite to bricklane. Spent a short little while there before I came hope to sleep. The Saturday, we started the weekend exactly where we left off the last tiem around, South kensington. For that wonderful cup of coffee and amazing cupcake. And then off we went in search of the famed Notting Hill. But as it turns out after we travelled a distance we came to know most of the tube lines to Notting Hill were shut down for maintence. So we decided to get take the bus. We found a bus stop where the bus to Notting Hill stops and as it turns out it took a long long while before we finally got on one. And then got off at ...

The English Rains

After a long day of Camden Town, I woke up to a very lazy Sunday afternoon. We wanted to go to Notting Hill but it remains closed on Sundays. (In a way that was good, too much of such markets gets the fun lost) One of our friends suggested we go out for lunch after which he would leave home. So I thought I would come home about 4 or maybe 6 (and write a report that is still pending). We went up to Tower Bridge to pick up another friend and walked along St Kathyrine Docks. In search of an english lunch on Thames we walked. There were many posh restuarants but none so English and we kept walking. And we walked and walked and asked for directions. Finally, landed in a quite english residential area, Wapping. Wapping ! We went up to a little place for lunch and found a table right next to Thames. And soon it began to rain, but we didn't move indoors. We just moved a little away under a shellter It was cold and breezy. But it was fun. And from there we walked on eastwards alongside Th...

Camden

Well Friday night I did sleep in and not join the other interns to the Royal Philanthromonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. But Saturday was much better. Taj, Colaba and Nariman got to wait ! Woke up to a lazy Saturday morning (more like afternoon) and looked up other people. We went to St James Park waiting for a friend to join us. Reached the park just in time to see the Pelicans being fed. Pelicans were huge proud birds that walked up to the public and groomed themselves and their might feathers as they posed for pictures. But the best part about the park was the pigeons and furry little squirrels. They weren't afraid of people at all. Then we went to Picadilly roamed about while we waited for a friend and then together took off to Camden Town. Camden Town . Is a funny place. Full of youthful vibes. We roamed around to find a food market. Every cuisine you could think of was stuffed into tiny stalls along side a pier. Just pick up your food and sit on one those toy moto...

The City

Image
The City of London! Intern diaries is open once again! The adventures began at 11am on November 4th 2009 when I got an internship offer, I was not told of the location. It could one of three locations: Singapore, HK or London. There was a time when I was told I was going to HK. Then there was a day when I received an email saying I am going to London. And then there was a time when I applied for my visa to the UK. And then there was a time when 3/4th left while I was stuck in the unfortunate 1/4th who didn't receive their visa yet. I was sent to Mumbai temporarily. And then I was still among the 2 people not to receive their visa. And then on the last day of the 8th week from applying for a visa, I received my visa. It was sent to my house in Hyderabad. 12:00 / Tue : I received my visa at home. 3:30 / Tue : I leave office in Mumbai 7:00 /Tue : I board my flight to Hyderabad 10:30 /Tue : My Hr calls to tell me my flight details to...

Recalling Summer Showers

Image
Summer showers really are the rains in the summer that give life to life forms. It's beautiful to watch them from under shelter and it's equally beautiful to watch them when under them. I thought I'll add these pictures to an old post from Jamshedpur days but as I looked back I realized I didn't blog about it. There was a day when in teh hot afternoon rain burst in the skies and there were these huge drops every where urging the soil to contribute the aroma, and three of us were watching television. My roommate from insti, a management internie from delhi and myself decided to stop watching the idiot box and start watching nature's beauty. We stood under a shelter and watched. Suddenly these girls decided to run out into the rain. they'd run out n run back in and do that again and again. And thenI got my umbrella and stood in the rain while these girls were running in and out. they urged me to do the same and finalyl, I let go of my umbrella. I stayed there unde...

Dard-e-TISCO

Well... I was in Tata Steel for internship this summer. I was a part of a short film made by some internies. I had also previously blogged about it. Now finally here it is:

Recalling Jamshedpur

I distinctly am aware that my food reviews are bullshit. But each review behind it has a million memories and the blogposts helps me store them all away. I remember the cute couple in CityCafe and it makes me wanna write a post on dating. Date with a Gentle Moon Maiden Pick her up and take her to CCD, chat up for an hour maybe. They take her to Jubilee Park and go for a boat ride. I am sure she will love it. If you still have time you can catch a laser show but I am not very for it. Now take her to dinner. Here you can go two ways: Equinox or Deepurple Equinox: have a relaxed dinner but be sure not to order dessert. Walk her to Bistupur after dinner and buy her a balloon. Drop by at the ice cream shop near Novelty. Deepurple: have a relaxed dinner but be sure not to order dessert. Buy her a balloon outside the hotel from that smart little kid who sells them there. Take an auto to Bistupur and drop by at the ice cream shop near Novelty. Then walk back with the ice cream till the small s...

All my bags are packed Im ready to go Im standin here outside your door I hate to call you up to say goodbye But the time is ticking Its late in the morn The tempo's waitin He's blowin his horn Already Im so lonesome I could die Gift's galore: a key chain blowing a bubble a tiny petalled scented candle rose little glass jewellery boxes tiny handmade cards with rainbows little cards to claim the friendship keychains and chains with intial pendents forever memories hidden in the tiny precious things

Eat Out @ Jamshedpur 5

The last in the series (to the relief of many) Centre Point - Spicy Kitchen I think it is spicy kitchen, not too sure. But it is the resturant in Centre Point hotel. Nice ambience, lots of firangees (mostly mongolian so probably from Corus). Like every other place you can drink and smoke here but we didn't see many and it didn't look like they do. The food was enjoyable but the best part is you get tea/coffee even at 11 in the night. and finally it is done !! I'm leaving Jamshedpur and I won't be eating here again (except in my mess tomorrow for lunch). A special mention : Masala Cold drink... it's different you; you must try it. Unimaginable to think that he changed Thums-Up into something so unlike it :)

DONE

Now is the time to sit back and relax So take the photographs and still frames in your mind. Hang it on a shelf In good health and good time. Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial. For what it's worth, it was worth all the while. It's something unpredictable but in the end it's right. I hope you had the time of your life.
